As the story goes, the Carraways are descendants of the Dukes of Buccleuch. In 1851 Nick's family moved to the middle west of the United States, where his grand uncle started the family's hardware business, which his Dad carries on today. The family is well known in the area, and because of their business they became wealthy people.
Nick was born in 1892. He grew up in the Middle West, where he also went to school. In 1915 he graduated from Yale university, East coast. During the Great War he served in France. After his return, he decided to leave the Middle West and to go East, where he started to learn the Bond business.
