Action:
Nick Carraway, our narrator, is introduced to us as an unbiased and objective person. Originally being from the Middle West where his parents own a hardware store, he has come to New York to learn the bond business. He finds a house at West Egg on Long Island Sound near New York where he rents a little house next to Jay Gatsby’s mansion. One day Nick drives over to East Egg, the neighbouring peninsula, to visit his second cousin once removed Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom. There he also meets Jordan Baker, a professional golf player. Jordan tells Nick about Tom’s “woman in New York” (17,10) and minutes later Tom receives a phone call from her. Furthermore the party’s conversations end in small talk. At the end of the chapter, after Nick has returned home to West Egg, Gatsby appears for the first time. Nick sees him standing in his yard and looking at a green light which is anchored on a dock at East Egg.
