Myrtle is Tom Buchanan’s mistress and they always meet secretly in an apartment in New York. Tom insists that Nick come with them, so they go to New York by train and take a taxi to the apartment. Later Myrtle’s sister Catherine and the McKees, from the flat below, join them. After a while they all get drunk and start discussions. In one of these discussions Myrtle provokes Tom by screaming Daisy’s name all the time. Tom gets really angry about that and breaks Myrtle’s nose which shows his irascible personality.
