Synopsis Chapter III

Characters:

  • Nick Carraway
  • Jordan Baker
  • Jay Gatsby
  • Owl Eyes

Settings:

  • Nick Carraway’s house
  • Jay Gatsby’s house

Action:

From his house at West Egg, Nick Carraway, the narrator is watching one of these parties going on at Gatsby’ s house.

When he himself gets invited to a “little party”(p.37, 1) at Gatsby’ s, he first wanders around feeling rather lost until he meets Jordan Baker again. On the way to her table, where she invited him to join her, they talk to several people concerning the rumours about Gatsby.

After a while Jordan gets bored and the two try to find the host. They walk past the Gothic library where they stop and talk to the drunk man, called Owl Eyes. Nick and Jordan wander around looking for Gatsby when they by accident stop at his table and join in his conversation. They do not know that they are actually talking to Gatsby until he indentifies himself.

Gatsby invites Nick to look at his new hydroplane the next day. When a servant arrives, Gatsby leaves the two and later calls Jordan into his room to talk to her. It is nearly morning when they finally leave Gatsby’s house and Nick drives Jordan home.
