Black youth in Harlem

Today, there are many problems the youths in Harlem have to deal with. Because of the bad family situations most teenager hang around in gangs because they have no family who looks after the youths, because they have to work and most times there is only one parent who is responsible for one household.

Consequently sometimes they become involved with a cime, or deal in drugs, becasue they are not teached what is right and wrong. There are also many gang wars between the different gangs because everyone wants to be the best and if you want to contact out of the gang, everyone will be against you, thus you have to be a member of a gang if you want to alive. Additionaly the have not much money, nevertheless they try to express their own style by wearing different clothes, hearing diferent kinds of music etc.. Many young black men are today adrift, angry and think that their social situation was all the fault of the ‘evil white man’. For working up their problems many youths express their feelings, disappoitments, doubts, and hopes in music and dance. As a cosequence of that, many popular rappers were born in parts of a town like Halem, the Bonx etc..There are some schools but not all youths go there. Many of them only hang around on the streets.

But there is also a progress going on. The rate of pregnancy is rosing, because of the information them were given. So many teenager say that they want to be a vigin until they will have married. And if they have sex most of them use condoms because of the fear of AIDS. Moreover there are regeneration programms as well, that are trying to built up and renovate houses and create new jobs so that life in Halem for teenager could become a bit easier. Beside it is important to say that many busloads of tourists are arriving to see Harlem's legendary gospel choirs and dance halls. Harlem still has problems - but there's no doubt that today the people have more hope for the future.
